Many economists express doubts about China's ability to move up the value chain to attain the status of a higher-income economy, especially since China started losing its competitiveness in light manufacturing to other emerging countries. With a total market capitalization of USD $3.9 trillion, China's A-share market ranks only behind the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and Japanese Stock Exchange. Despite its size, the A-share market remains largely off limits to foreign investors. But change is coming and the introduction of a Mutual Market Access (MMA) program is an important step in opening up China to global investors.
